Xiongqi’s Name Studies – Theoretical Insights

The Study of Names by Mr. Xiongqi – Theoretical Insights
This is a well-known yet often forgotten or misapplied field of study. It is assumed that the original purpose of designing this theory was to assist with the “auspicious elements of the Four Pillars and Eight Characters.”

Nowadays, one could say that people have lost sight of its fundamental principles and are chasing after superficial details. Instead of discussing whether the phonetic energies and five elements are beneficial to the original name bearer, they focus solely on the interactions of the Three Talents and Five Grids or merely on the auspiciousness of stroke counts. Even worse, these two aspects have been split into two factions—how ridiculous is that? Although there are still debates regarding phonetic energies and five elements due to regional dialect differences, we who study this should not cling to one while discarding the other; such an approach is not conducive to scholarly pursuits.
Therefore, if one wishes to name or analyze using this theory, it is essential first to have a profound understanding of how to determine the auspicious deities in relation to one’s Eight Characters. Otherwise, without any basis for judgment, how can one ascertain what is beneficial for the original name bearer? In such cases, discussions about Three Talents and Five Grids or stroke counts lose their significance and become meaningless. Moreover, even if both Three Talents and Five Grids as well as stroke counts are perfect but do not meet actual needs in terms of phonetic energies, they will still be useless. Have you grasped this principle? Additionally, when judging whether a name is good or bad, the order of priority should be: phonetic energies and five elements take precedence over interactions within Three Talents and Five Grids; interactions within Three Talents and Five Grids take precedence over auspiciousness in stroke counts. Note: For details on arranging Eight Characters and determining auspicious deities, please refer to my book “Eight Character Arena,” which elaborates on these topics without further elaboration.
Furthermore, when configuring Three Talents and Five Grids, it is necessary to examine less favorable palaces in the Four Pillars’ Eight Characters in order to enhance harmony so that a complementary effect can be achieved. The five elements within Three Talents and Five Grids are used for discussing personality traits, exploring familial relationships, and assessing fortune; they should not be used merely to supplement the auspicious deities derived from Eight Characters—this point must be confirmed without confusion. Additionally, auspiciousness in stroke counts will influence how Three Talents and Five Grids operate; it does not function independently without significant implications. A deeper understanding of this point is also necessary to avoid misinterpretation or erroneous judgments.
