Why is Spiritual Practice Necessary?

Why is spiritual cultivation necessary?

The “spirit” of all beings is originally pure and unconditioned, but due to worldly confusion, they spend their entire lives chasing fame, fortune, and power, thus losing their true nature. Therefore, the meaning of spiritual cultivation is to return the spirit to its source, for people to return to their true nature and no longer be lost, enabling them to escape the suffering of the cycle of birth and death.

But how can we help the spirit return to its source and people return to their true nature? It requires practice. “Cultivation” means eliminating greed, anger, ignorance, arrogance, and hesitation in order to cultivate the heart and nurture one’s character while establishing virtue. “Practice” refers to actively engaging in acts of charity, observing precepts, enduring humiliation, striving diligently, and meditating in order to benefit the world and transform others; only then can one achieve a pure heart and spirit that returns to its original source. Those with divine missions should also take on tasks from above to punish evil and reward good deeds, assist the weak and impoverished, resolve various disasters, fulfill their responsibilities, lead beings back to their original source, help restore balance with Mother Nature by resolving karmic debts from past lives so that everything can be settled without falling back into the cycle of birth and death. However, practitioners should not seek supernatural powers or magical abilities as goals for spiritual cultivation; they must always remember that self-cultivation for the benefit of others is their responsibility.

One can also choose more reputable temples or organizations based on recommendations from senior practitioners who are already cultivating or from a more objective perspective. By making a firm decision to practice sincerely and trusting in the guidance of temple leaders, one can find tangible mentors for spiritual cultivation.

The main purpose of practicing spirituality:
● The foremost aspect of practice is cultivating one’s compassion in order to rediscover one’s true nature (to see clearly one’s mind). Strive diligently every day for the benefit of all beings.

● Spiritual practice emphasizes nurturing one’s heart and character; cultivating oneself physically and spiritually; nurturing one’s spirit while abandoning bad habits; turning away from evil towards goodness rather than blindly pursuing supernatural powers.

● Spiritual cultivation must recognize truthfulness by learning according to “the Way,” acting according to “principles,” conforming with nature without clinging onto supernatural powers or manifestations.

● Practitioners must silently work hard at accumulating merits both visible (public) and hidden (private) so as to complete their life’s lessons; however they must not cling onto results or superficial appearances in their practice.

● Those engaged in spiritual cultivation should focus on simultaneously developing body, mind, and spirit in order achieve unity among them.

● The path emphasizes ethics and morality; as long as there is love in one’s heart for humanity’s feelings everywhere becomes a joyful paradise.

● Cultivating spirituality is a lifelong major undertaking; it is not merely a momentary endeavor. When achievements are made one must constantly reflect upon oneself so as not fall into arrogance which could destroy one’s path or foundation.

● Through spiritual cultivation one hopes soon escape from the cycle of birth and death.

● The path relies on accumulating merits through good deeds directed towards karmic relatives across lifetimes so that through spirit one attains enlightenment while cultivating both heart-mind practices along with physical actions leading towards resolving karmic debts across lifetimes thus achieving restoration back into origin (source).
