The Heart Mantra of the Śūraṅgama Mantra
The “Śūraṅgama Mantra” (full title: “Great Buddha’s Crown Śūraṅgama Divine Mantra”) comes from Volume Seven of the Mahayana Buddhist scripture The Śūraṅgama Sūtra, formally titled The Śūraṅgama Sūtra of the Tathāgata’s Secret Cause and Cultivation, the Complete Meaning of the Realization of the Fruits of Practice, and the Myriad Practices of All Bodhisattvas (abbreviated as The Śūraṅgama Sūtra).
Reciting or practicing the Śūraṅgama Heart Mantra mainly brings the following extraordinary benefits:
- Subduing demons and averting calamities: It dispels interference from all heterodox teachings and evil arts, heavenly demons, and ghosts and goblins, preventing sudden disasters, misfortunes, and negative energies.
- Purifying grave offenses: It can rapidly eliminate extremely heavy karmic obstacles such as the five heinous offenses, enabling those who have broken the precepts to restore the purity of their precept body.
- Opening wisdom and increasing intelligence: It calms afflictions and delusive thoughts, enhances concentration, and helps practitioners remain non-retrogressive on the path to bodhi.
- Protection and remembrance by all Buddhas: It invokes countless Vajra Dharma-protectors to constantly remain at one’s side, turning danger into safety and always bringing one to a good rebirth.
