Benefits of reciting or writing this verse:
  • Relieve anxiety and settle body and mind:

By praising the Bodhisattva’s pure wisdom and dignified presence, one can quickly gather the scattered thoughts of the mind and dispel the anxiety, fear, and attachment brought on by the pressures of modern life
  • Form good affinities and resolve bad ones:

The verse mentions “thirty-two responses throughout the dust-filled realms.” Practitioners can thereby cultivate a Bodhisattva-like compassion and tolerance, helping toimprove interpersonal relationships and resolve bad affinities
  • Avert disasters and calamities, and answer cries for help:

Inheriting Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva’s vow that “in a thousand places prayed to, in a thousand places answered,” when one encounters urgent worldly hardships in life (such as illness, accidents, or spiritual suffering), sincere recitation can evoke a response andturn danger into safety
  • Increase wisdom and break the three poisons:

Through visualizing the Bodhisattva holding willow branches and sprinkling sweet dew, one can cleanse the inner torment of the “three poisons” of greed, anger, and ignorance, therebyawakening wisdom and cleansing karmic obstacles of the mind

The original text is as follows:

Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva is wondrous and hard to repay; pure and dignified, cultivated over countless kalpas. Thirty-two responses extend throughout the dust-filled realms; for hundreds of thousands of myriads of kalpas, transforming Jambudvipa,

sweet dew in the vase is always sprinkled, willow branches in the hand know no autumn; in a thousand places prayed to, in a thousand places manifested, in the bitter sea always a boat that ferries people across.
