Incantation of the Old Lord

The Divine Incantation of Lao Jun

The “Incantation of the Great Supreme Lao Jun” mainly comes fromfolk Daoist ritual manuals, copies of liturgical rites and ceremonies (commonly called the master’s ledger book), and orally transmitted secret records of folk belief, rather than being directly excerpted from the early core scriptures in the Orthodox Daoist Canon.

The following are its effects:
1. Exorcising evil and warding off malevolent influences
The incantation mentions, “When the command arrives, thunder and lightning follow.” As the supreme deity of Daoism, Taishang Laojun possesses immense divine power and deterrent force.
  • Ward off evil and cleanse impurity: It can drive away unclean energies, yin and evil qi, or mountain spirits and ghosts in the surrounding area.
  • Resolve harmful influences: If you feel unwell after entering or leaving hospitals, cemeteries, haunted houses, or remote wilderness areas, reciting this incantation can form an invisible protective barrier.
2. Turning misfortune into good fortune and dispelling calamity
As the incantation says, “When the disciple is in distress, may you graciously come along. Turn misfortune into good fortune, and transform disaster into auspiciousness,” this spell is specifically designed to “save the suffering and relieve the afflicted.”
  • Pray for safety when going out: Silently reciting it while on business trips, long journeys, driving, or taking transportation can pray for smooth travel and help avoid traffic accidents.
  • Resolve unwarranted disasters: When encountering scheming villains, lawsuits and disputes, or sudden downturns in fortune in daily life (such as offending Tai Sui or an unfavorable year), reciting this incantation can help reverse one’s luck and turn calamity into blessing.
3. Calming the spirit and opening wisdom
Lao Jun is the Great Supreme Dao Ancestor, representing the Dao body of purity, stillness, and non-action.
  • Calming fright and settling the soul: When children or adults cry at night, suffer insomnia, or have many dreams due to fright, reciting this incantation can soothe the three souls and seven spirits and restore the original spirit.
  • Relieving anxiety: When facing major exams, interviews, or feeling agitated and unable to think, sincere recitation can quickly settle the mind, allowing inner calm and clarity to return.

The original text is as follows:

Great Supreme Lao Jun, present throughout the myriad blossoms. The Dao responds without fail, within the Three Realms.

Within the Six Directions, those who follow it are auspicious, those who oppose it are inauspicious.

When the command arrives, thunder and lightning follow. When the disciple is in distress, may you graciously come along.

Turn misfortune into good fortune, and transform disaster into auspiciousness. Swiftly, swiftly, as the law decrees.
