Incantation for Offering Incense to the Deity

Incantation for Offering Incense

Incantation for Offering IncenseThe earliest and most central source is the Taoist daily scriptureThe Scripture of Morning and Evening Devotions of the Xuanmen (abbreviated as The Morning and Evening Devotions Scripture).

Four core effects:
  • Spiritual communication and transmission of messages (direct communication): This is the primary effect. Taoism emphasizes the “activation of the incense burner”; reciting this incantation can transform the curling incense smoke of the mortal world into “cloud script” that leads to the immortal realm, directly conveying the practitioner’s sincerity and prayers to the Nine Heavens, achieving a communicative effect of “resonance between humans and gods.”
  • Purifying body and mind (inner and outer cleansing): Reciting the incantation can help the practitioner dispel distracting thoughts, strengthen faith, and attain a state of outer environmental purity and inner spiritual clarity, laying a good sacred atmosphere for subsequent scripture recitation or ritual practice.
  • Inviting divine beings and true immortals (divine protection): The phrase “true spirits look down, immortal banners arrive at the pavilion” in the incantation has an evocative function, able to invite the lofty sages, true immortals, and protective deities and generals to descend to the ritual altar and protect the practitioner reciting scriptures and incantations.
  • Spiritual warding against evil (enhancing righteous qi): Through sincere incense burning and communion with the Heavenly Emperor (deities), one can enhance the practitioner’s own positive energy, enabling the spirit to ward off evil and resist external disturbances.

The original text is as follows:

The Dao is learned from the heart; the heart transmits through incense.

Incense is lit in the jade burner; the heart dwells before the Emperor.

True spirits look down; immortal banners arrive at the pavilion.

Let this servant report and announce it, so it may reach the Nine Heavens directly.
