Donghua Emperor Lord (Lord Mu) Invocation Mantra
- Date of composition: probably composed during theEastern Jin period (the ancient Lingbao scripture stage).
- Original background: The scripture records that this section isa secret method for cultivating the Eastern Azure Qi. Practitioners, at specific times (such as the Beginning of Spring or at dawn each day), face east, visualize the supreme primordial azure qi of the East and the divine presence of the Azure Emperor of the Eastern Sacred Peak descending, and recite this mantra to “rectify the immortal register,” “pacify and govern the liver palace,” and “attain longevity of the body.”
- Harmonizing and strengthening yang qi: Donghua Emperor Lord governs the flourishing qi of the East and the source from which all things are generated. Reciting and holding this mantra can resonate with the Emperor Lord’s “supremely true qi of Donghua,” replenishing the body with pure yang righteous qi, leaving one full of spirit and vitality.
- Dispelling evil, avoiding misfortune, and transforming harmful influences: The qi of utmost yang can overcome all yin evil, baleful influences, and demons and goblins. This mantra can stabilize the spiritual mountain (metaphorically, the five organs and the original spirit within the human body), regulating and purifying the feng shui and magnetic field of the surrounding space.
- Assisting cultivation and elevating the state of mind: In the mantra, “moving in and out of the Three Pure Ones” and “ascending to Taiwei” represent passage to the heavenly realm and attainment of higher levels of cultivation. Practitioners who recite this mantra can, through the protective power of Donghua Emperor Lord, remove obstacles to practice, clarify and purify the mind, and stabilize the three hun and seven po souls.
- Directing vitality and praying for blessings and wealth: The phrase “directing the movement of Goumang” in the mantra refers to the wood deity “Goumang,” who governs spring and the growth of plants and trees. In folk practice and ritual applications, this represents activating the forces of growth, prosperity, and sustenance between heaven and earth, bringing benefits such as attracting wealth and blessings, resolving debt and hardship, and widely forming good affinities.
The original text is as follows:
The nine gates of the Eastern Heaven, within them is the Primordial Sovereign; in and out of the Three Pure Ones, roaming in the dark and vast Flower Chamber.
Stabilizing the spiritual mountain, directing the movement of Goumang; above, encircled by blue clouds, nine thousand rays of cold light.
Riding in feathered carriages, twelve flying dragons; on the left attends the Azure-Waisted One, on the right guards the divine boy.
Now I hold the law tablets, burn the jade writ, with sincere heart invoke and request, and present the words to the higher officials.
My body wears the red writ, my name is entered in the Emperor’s hall; I pray the immortals will deign to look upon me, within the blue register.
The heavenly spirit carriage descends, coming down into my chamber; the two qi merge, transforming form into the infant hidden within.
Summon forth radiant splendor, spiritual brilliance flows and pours in; the face gives rise to a golden countenance, seated, it brings about the natural.
Divine beings communicate, heaven and earth without end; Eastern Emperor Lord, swiftly descend to the sacred altar.
Om. Ah. Hum. Seal.
