For now, let’s set aside the debate between “the usefulness of names” and “the uselessness of names” and explore the significance of naming, which may be more practical.
A name is not only my code, a symbol that distinguishes me from others, but also an extension of my parents’ expectations, a lifelong motto, or a personal aspiration.
Therefore, naming is a solemn and sacred task that should not be taken lightly.
However, the current chaos in society stems from exaggerated and misleading name analyses by “fortune tellers,” along with the erroneous belief that changing one’s name can change one’s fate. This has led to a fervent trend of name changes,
that is truly disheartening and frustrating. It has further burdened friends who are already facing difficulties in life, leaving them with lingering worries. Thus, unless one spends money to change their name to avert misfortune,
they are left to live under the shadow of their original name. This is truly regrettable. It is precisely for this reason that I felt compelled to write this book.
In fact, people’s understanding of onomastics (the study of names) is shallow; they cannot grasp the full picture and thus fall prey to misconceptions. Their perceptions are clouded,
enabling unscrupulous practitioners to take advantage of them. As a result, beautiful, memorable names with profound meanings are discarded—what a pity and what a tragedy! Because there are many schools of thought in onomastics with differing opinions,
conflicts are common—aren’t you aware of this “hero”? Therefore, I hope that through the explanations in this book, I can unveil the mysteries and shackles surrounding onomastics,
with the aim of correcting misconceptions about naming.
The Chinese language contains character forms, sounds, and meanings; however, the onomastic theories circulating in society lack thorough consideration.
Some focus solely on character forms or meanings—such as zodiac-based naming theories, sixty-year cycle naming theories, pictographic naming theories, celestial phenomenon naming theories,… Others focus only on stroke counts,
completely disregarding character forms or meanings—such as Kumaki’s naming theory, heavenly fortune naming theory, nine palaces naming theory, I Ching-based naming theory,…
Hence regardless of how loudly each school proclaims its principles, they often engage in selective interpretation; they do not represent authentic practices in naming.
Therefore, in order to provide everyone with correct concepts regarding naming practices,
this book will begin by discussing the origins and evolution of character creation before playfully explaining techniques for interpreting characters.
This will broaden everyone’s understanding and application of language.
I will also comprehensively reveal new insights into Kumaki’s naming theory, heavenly fortune naming theory, nine palaces naming theory,
and sixty-year cycle naming theory’s mysteries and blind spots through systematic introductions so that interested readers can learn
and expand their knowledge without being misled by fallacies.
