The character for “Dao” (道) also means “head” (首) and “to walk” (行), which signifies a firm determination to walk the path. With a resolute heart for practice, one must bravely move forward without regrets or looking back.
Doing Good – The character for “Good” (善) is formed by the characters for “beautiful” (美) and “mouth” (口); this means speaking well. However, it should not be flattery or sycophancy; one should speak frankly but not hurt others’ feelings. To practice goodness,
one must inform the world and those around them, keeping nothing private, being kind to others, cultivating a strong will to do good, refraining from harsh words, and encouraging good deeds.
Stopping Evil – The character for “Evil” (惡) consists of the elements representing a divided heart; it implies having no divided mind. Understanding the power of walking the path and the will to promote goodness means moving forward without hesitation with a single-minded focus; this is how one stops evil.
The character for “Virtue” (德) involves observing oneself with ten eyes; constantly reflecting on mistakes and correcting them when they occur. By wholeheartedly walking the path, one establishes a virtuous demeanor.
