Fengdu Ghost City is located in Fengdu County, on the southeastern edge of the Sichuan Basin. During the Spring and Autumn period, it was called ‘Bazi Biedu’. In the second year of Emperor He of the Eastern Han Dynasty (Yongyuan 2), it was separated from Zhi County to establish its own county, named ‘Fengdu County’, which has a history of over 1900 years.
Fengdu Ghost City is one of the ‘Seventy-Two Blessed Lands of Taoism’. Since the Han Dynasty, there have been legends about two immortals, Yin Changsheng and Wang Fangping, who lived in seclusion on Pingdu Mountain to cultivate their way to immortality. Over time, it has been mistakenly said that ‘Yin and Wang’ refers to the ‘King of Hell’, and thus this place became known as ‘Ghost Capital’.
