Calling Wukong – The Wonderful Story of Sun Wukong in Black Myth Wukong and the Eastern Chinese Deities

The Wonderful Story of “Sun Wukong” in Black Myth Wukong, Concerning the Deities of Eastern China

Wukong was born on the Flower and Fruit Mountain in the proud nation of Dongsheng Shenzhou. He originally was a spirit stone on Flower and Fruit Mountain, which suddenly burst after absorbing the essence of heaven and earth. From birth, Wukong exhibited extraordinary spirituality and strength, becoming the “Monkey King” of Flower and Fruit Mountain. In search of the secret to immortality, Wukong left Flower and Fruit Mountain to become a disciple under Master Bodhi. Here, he learned the powerful magic of “Seventy-Two Transformations,” mastering its intricacies, particularly the technique of creating clones that allowed him to change his appearance and abilities at will. This included transforming into other creatures or objects for reconnaissance, infiltrating enemy lines, confusing foes, and other tactics. This skill proved miraculous during his future journey to retrieve scriptures from the West and when he caused chaos in Heaven, enabling him to flexibly respond to various challenges. He also acquired his trusty transportation buddy “Cloud Somersault,” said to fly at incredible speeds—one somersault covering eighty thousand miles. Upon completing his training and descending from the mountain, he was given the name “Sun Wukong” by his master Bodhi, symbolizing “understanding emptiness and transcending life and death.”

After returning from his training to Flower and Fruit Mountain, Sun Wukong claimed kingship there with his magical powers, attracting the attention of deities in Heaven. To subdue him peacefully, they appointed him as “Bi Ma Wen,” claiming he had been granted an official title as a deity; however, this was merely a low-ranking position managing celestial horses (essentially a stable keeper). Initially unaware of this insult, Wukong accepted it gladly. But upon learning the truth later on, he felt insulted by these condescending deities and angrily resigned to return as king over Flower and Fruit Mountain while proclaiming himself “Great Sage Equal to Heaven,” meaning a great sage equal to Heaven itself.

Back at Flower and Fruit Mountain after being insulted by Heaven’s deities who looked down on him with their self-righteousness, Wukong refused to be placed in their circle again; he sought competition with Heaven itself. Although Heaven complied by granting him the title “Great Sage Equal to Heaven,” they did not give him any real power. Dissatisfied with just a nominal title led to the incident known as “The Great Sage Equal to Heaven’s Chaos in Heaven.” He seized peaches from the Heavenly Peach Garden, divine wine from celestial gatherings, even stealing Laozi’s Nine-Turn Golden Elixir in order to ensure his immortality; secretly infiltrating Hell itself where he altered his life-and-death register. He erased “death” from it while changing “life” into “eternal life,” symbolizing that he had freed himself from life-and-death constraints achieving eternal longevity. These actions infuriated Heaven further. Consequently, Emperor Jade dispatched heavenly soldiers intending to suppress him but were all repelled one by one by Sun Wukong (truly deserving of being called Buddha Victorious in Battle).
Faced with an inability to subdue Wukong, Heaven turned westward seeking Buddha Tathagata for a showdown with Sun Wukong. Tathagata made a wager with Sun Wukong; if he could escape from Tathagata’s palm then he would make him Emperor Jade. Confidently accepting this challenge led Sun Wukong into repeated failures—no matter how hard he tried; he could not escape Tathagata’s grasp time after time until finally…Wukong lost; indeed admitting defeat (what a man!). Thus he was pressed beneath Five Finger Mountain (the five fingers symbolize gold, wood, water, fire, earth—the five elements), suppressing Sun Wukong’s powers where he spent five long years alone under that mountain reflecting deeply during this period.

After enduring five long years like this—at this point Guanyin Bodhisattva received orders from Buddha Tathagata seeking someone for scripture retrieval heading westward; she chose Sun Wukong as Tang Seng’s protector disciple. At that same time Guanyin also subdued Prince San of West Sea Dragon King who faced execution for violating rules but was given another chance for rebirth through transformation into a white horse accompanying Tang Seng as his steed—a significant companion along their journey towards retrieving scriptures.

Following Guanyin Bodhisattva’s guidance Tang Seng arrived at Five Finger Mountain reciting spells that released Tathagata’s seal freeing Sun Wukong. By this time after five hundred years of solitude and reflection Sun Wukong was no longer that arrogant Great Sage Equal to Heaven from before; instead filled with gratitude towards Tang Seng willing now to be his disciple pledging protection during their journey westward.

However inherent traits are hard to change; despite promising reforming behavior bursts of anger still occasionally erupted during their scripture retrieval journey causing Tang Seng helplessly seeking advice from Guanyin Bodhisattva on how best control such an unruly disciple? To help Tang Seng better manage Sun Wukong she provided him with a golden hoop (a stylish headpiece) teaching how use “Tightening Spell.” Tang Seng placed it upon Sun Wukong’s head so whenever Sun did not obey he’d recite spells causing unbearable headaches for him through this method gradually teaching Sun control over temper transforming him from an unruly stone monkey into a devoted protector disciple.</ span ></ span >
