Just Observe Your Breath Observing the breath is a simple yet profoundly meaningful and powerful practice that is both ordinary and miraculous. Persist in observing it, delve deeply into practicing it, and you will surely find treasures in poverty, light in darkness. Observe the breath— In the beginning, just observe the breath, In the middle stage, just observe the breath, In the later stage, just observe the breath. Observing the breath is like drinking honey; it is sweet at every stage—beginning, middle, and end. Observe the breath: The breath comes in—this is a fact, The breath goes out—this is a fact. This is a long breath—this is reality, This is a short breath—this is reality… The key to observing the breath is objectivity; You must continuously practice this ability of objective observation, Until you see truth through your breathing, Until you see Buddha in your breathing. Through observing the breath, You can cultivate concentration and experience mental and physical stability; You can develop insight and gain wisdom; You can understand and become familiar with life’s wondrous functions, living like Buddhas or Bodhisattvas. … Objective observation of breathing involves only body and breath; there is no “self.” Objective observation of breathing reveals that there are no breather; breathing appears as an illusion. Breathing belongs to the body’s natural rhythm; Breathing encompasses its own essence; Breathing symbolizes harmony among all phenomena; Breathing embodies the gentle winds of heaven and earth… The body breathes on its own like a soy milk machine working independently; The body breathes on its own like a television automatically switching channels; The body breathes on its own like a record player playing songs by itself; The body breathes on its own like the wind blowing through heaven and earth… From observing the breath, one can perceive truth; From observing the breath, one can see ultimate reality. From observing the breath, one can experience this fact of “no self”; From observing the breath, understanding and realization can align with all Buddhas. When you start to observe your breathing, various thoughts will arise to disturb you. Don’t pay them any mind; just keep focusing on your breathing. Continuously return to observing your breathing until your mind becomes pure, Until you realize no self exists, Until you recognize and understand life’s wondrous functions… Do not underestimate observing your breathing—it can give you everything you desire. It’s like planting an invisible field: The more effort you put into it, the more it returns to you. In early stages regardless of what happens, just keep observing your breathing. In mid-stages regardless of what happens, just keep observing your breathing. In later stages regardless of what happens, just keep observing your breathing. Observing your breathing is a marvelous method—a great Dharma that allows deep exploration. It not only enables insight into all phenomena’s roots but also leads to ultimate liberation—truly real and not false.
