Discussion on “Utilizing People”

Discussing “Hiring”
When it comes to hiring, it is indeed a set of skills; being able to “know people and assign them appropriately” is essential. One cannot assign an outstanding college graduate to clean toilets; they would likely resign after a short time. Similarly, one cannot assign a careless person to manage accounts; I believe it wouldn’t take long before the accounts become a complete mess. Therefore, understanding the tendencies and characteristics of applicants or employees through their profiles can serve as a significant tool for selection or assignment.

However, when we glean from an employee’s profile whether they can be assigned to a role, one must also be able to understand the boss’s intentions before formal assignment; otherwise, it could lead to numerous embarrassing situations. For example, there was once a colonel who took the train from Pingtung to Taipei in hopes of being promoted to brigadier general. He met with President Chiang Kai-shek, who was from Zhejiang Province and had a strong accent. Upon meeting, the president asked him, “What are you here for?” The colonel replied, “Report to the president, I came by train.” The president then responded, “Then you can just take the train back.” Thus, his promotion was put on hold. The underlying principle is that “you must understand your boss’s intentions! Otherwise, if I ask you to attack Xiamen and you end up attacking Kinmen instead, that could lead to serious trouble.”
In addition, if someone is hired as a supervisor, aside from having leadership abilities, responsibility and loyalty are quite important. Only with responsibility and loyalty can they fulfill my trust without merely having capability while secretly pursuing personal interests or opposing me behind my back.
