The Essence of Spiritual Cultivation
Cultivation primarily involves nurturing the heart and character, refining the body and spirit, and cultivating the soul and mind. However, many practitioners know these principles but fail to put them into practice; it is indeed a case of “easy to know, hard to do”! In the realm of alchemical cultivation, the sequence of practice is as follows: refining essence into qi, refining qi into spirit, refining spirit back to emptiness, and refining emptiness to unite with the Dao.
This outlines a systematic approach to cultivation that requires taking one step at a time—gradually progressing and experiencing each stage. Genuine cultivation cannot be rushed! I have seen many students and practitioners who often hesitate in their spiritual journey due to a lack of patience and perseverance.
Moreover, many practitioners find that their so-called “famous teachers” or “masters” significantly hinder their progress in learning and cultivation. Some predecessors lack deep understanding in Buddhist or Daoist teachings and merely rely on personal experiences to guide students through superficial methods.
As a result, many practitioners struggle to find answers relevant to their own experiences in spiritual practice, leading to numerous doubts that hinder their advancement. The reason for obstacles on the path of cultivation is that you have not yet found the source of your true nature! It is not that your teacher tells you not to ask too many questions; rather, if you earnestly cultivate yourself, your spiritual needs will be addressed.
The path of learning and cultivation must involve reliance on enlightened teachers for guidance. Only through enlightened masters can one understand the sequential teachings from celestial beings regarding cultivation practices. One must comprehend each process’s lessons; only with intention and willingness can one receive blessings from celestial beings. There must be “letting go” before there can be “gaining”; without letting go, there can be no gain. Everything must align with heavenly will for it to unfold smoothly.
Spiritual cultivation should ideally belong within the Daoist tradition but has been criticized by those within it! This is because many practitioners do not base their practices on classical texts nor can they explain the true meaning or benefits of spiritual phenomena. Most are obsessed with supernatural powers or manifestations without realizing that such pursuits may lead them astray!
The ultimate goal of cultivation is not seeking supernatural powers but seeking liberation from karmic entanglements—seeking how best to benefit others! Furthermore, one should seek not for future lives! Achieving liberation—The greatest obstacle in spiritual practice lies in distinguishing between one’s innate spirit (benling), worldly spirits (shijie ling), and external spirits (wailing). Being overly praised often leads naturally to arrogance.
When you believe your understanding is entirely correct, it becomes challenging to accept others’ opinions; thus you may not verify or even consider where your received spiritual messages originate from.
We must cultivate wisdom in order to break free from limitations, transcend our current state, and elevate ourselves onto the true path of Daoism. The path of spiritual cultivation is not impossible; it requires careful steps as if walking on thin ice. By letting go of excessive attachments and desires, we can clearly see how best to proceed along our journey ahead.
As the saying goes: “The master leads you through the door; it’s up to you for personal practice.” Everything stems from “the heart’s creation; actions depend on human effort.” If you do not take action yourself, no one will force you; however, if your heart strays too far or harbors excessive desires—it is humans making decisions rather than divine beings making decisions for you.
Nowadays, amidst declining moral standards, sincere seekers often struggle to identify who truly qualifies as an enlightened teacher versus someone merely claiming expertise? Clinging onto flimsy support as if it were a lifeboat—isn’t that dangerous? Yes! It’s very risky—but what else can we do?
Wise words: True enlightened teachers can be categorized into four major types: 1. Those who can impart teachings effectively are genuine masters. 2. Those who understand the principles behind yin-yang dynamics are genuine masters. 3. Those who grasp the true meaning behind Zen practices are genuine masters. 4. Those who penetrate into the essence of reality within all realms are genuine masters. What does a practitioner define as an enlightened teacher?
Wise words: Cultivation must follow a progressive sequence involving “learning,” “practicing,” “acting,” “certifying,” and “awakening.” Without learning there cannot be correction; without practicing there cannot be proper intention; without action there cannot be real proof; without certification there cannot be understanding of law; without awakening there cannot be realization of Dao; without law there cannot be unification with Dao; without Dao there cannot be resolution.
Wise words: Non-action represents “Dao”; action represents “Law.” Without “Law,” how could one realize what “Dao” truly is!
Wise words: Quiet practices refine spiritual energy while active practices refine vital energy; introspective practices cultivate true energy while foundational work refines primordial fire at lower dantian—transforming primordial energy through alchemical processes opens up pathways throughout one’s being.
Wise words: Pure yang primordial energy circulates like rivers flowing smoothly while primordial eight trigrams position themselves accurately—heavenly beings unite with humans via golden threads connecting them together—energy messages convey heavenly intentions while performing virtuous deeds resolves karmic obstacles—internal techniques require oral transmission paired with heartfelt teaching so as achieve imprinting meditative states confirming heavenly missions at present moment.
Wise words: Seeking teachers respectfully visiting paths honoring mentors humbly receiving teachings transmitting true meanings returning roots recognizing origins clarifying mind seeing nature attaining authentic transmissions transcending realms liberating cycles certifying awakening sources—all levels must reach beyond self-identity beyond individual identity beyond sentient being identity beyond lifespan identity—that means never being overly subjective about everything (“ego attachment,” “law attachment”).
Using one’s subjective consciousness denies others’ methods without undergoing objective verification creates invisible barriers disrupting connections among fellow practitioners preventing complete understanding regarding realities existing within all realms—the truth remains unknown about what “Dao” really signifies? Ignorance leads only towards arrogance—a common critique faced by today’s practitioners! How lamentable! How helpless!
If you wish for your spirituality or character elevation—you must undergo rigorous training & trials passing assessments conducted by higher deities & celestial examiners before having opportunities for advancement—and Earth serves as an extensive examination ground within spirit realms—I believe every practitioner hopes this lifetime brings achievements along their paths!
Humanity often gets blinded by glamorous appearances—as they say: high places bring chilliness—the essence lies not in external packaging (superficial practice) but whether inner virtues are fulfilled whether moral character harmonizes whether Buddha-nature awakens—how inner virtue guides sentient beings towards rightful paths—that exemplifies what religious propagators ought embody!
Golden elixir represents authentic human essence (yuanqi). One’s desire lacks firmness when cultivating solar deities’ land Kunlun region—a focused heart achieves sacred embryo formation internally guarding original essence solidifies embryonic form representing core tenets underlying immortality traditions—the immortal lineage emphasizes dual training involving life-force refinement merging qi transforming spirit merging spirit returning unity merging Dao following systematic approaches—spiritual energies unify internally certifying realities across all realms,
Ascending towards heaven shedding shells soaring like colorful phoenixes achieving Buddhahood via Kun Path attaining elixirs transforming into dragons achieving immortality via Qian Path—the sacred embryo embodies both aspects representing authentic humans—those attaining elixirs ascend becoming celestial beings merging truths across various religious domains displaying wondrous transformations—not merely seeking doctrines through written texts but genuinely practicing revealing truths behind existence!
There exist three thousand six hundred doors within Taoist teachings everyone holds onto unique roots,
Yet some profound gateways lie outside those three thousand six hundred doors.
Buddha resides upon Spirit Mountain don’t seek afar,
Spirit Mountain dwells right within your heart,
Everyone possesses their own Spirit Mountain pagoda better yet strive beneath its tower.
Buddha expounds three thousand volumes classics yet rightful Dharma eye remains unsaid,
In these final days fortunate ones obtain this Dharma become ageless sages from East.
Reflecting light returns illuminating inner mirror akin moonlight reflecting illusions,
Elixirs formed return daylight revealing wisdom imprinting meditative hearts.
